Governor Hogan Submits Redistricting Maps Drawn By Nonpartisan Independent Citizens To Maryland Legislature

In a historic moment for the state of Maryland and “for democracy,” Governor Hogan submitted fair redistricting maps to the legislature that were drawn by a non-partisan independent citizens commission.

This is the first time in the history of the state that the governor has submitted fair maps that were drawn by independent citizens, not politicians or party bosses. Maryland is the most gerrymandered state in the country. Just one example is Maryland’s 3rd congressional district, which is known as “the nation’s most bizarrely gerrymandered district” according to the Washington Post and is held by Congressman John Sarbanes — the lead sponsor of HR 1.

According to Governor Hogan, “free and fair elections are the foundation of American democracy and the most basic promise that those in power can pledge to citizens…These fair maps finally bring an end to decades of gerrymandering in Maryland, which has made a mockery of our electoral system.”
